Short-Term Radon Testing vs. Continuous Radon Monitoring
If you're new to radon testing, it's easy to assume "a radon test" means one thing. In practice, the two products reviewed on this site represent two genuinely different approaches, and understanding the difference is the first step before choosing either one.
Short-term testing
A short-term test, like the First Alert RD1 reviewed on this site, is a single measurement over a fixed window -- in the RD1's case, exactly 48 hours, per the manufacturer's own user manual. You expose the test kit under closed-house conditions, mail it to an analyzing laboratory, and receive a written result some time later.
This gives you a snapshot: a single number, from a single window of time. It's a reasonable, low-cost way to get a first reading, especially if you've never tested before or need a documented result for a specific purpose, such as a real estate transaction.
Continuous monitoring
A continuous monitor, like the Airthings Wave Radon reviewed on this site, is a battery-powered device that stays in place and keeps measuring, syncing readings to a companion app. Per the manufacturer's own accuracy claim, its precision actually improves the longer it runs -- within 10% after 7 days, tightening to within 5% after 2 months of continuous operation.
This gives you a trend instead of a snapshot: ongoing data across different seasons, weather conditions, and household patterns, rather than one isolated 48-hour window.
Why this distinction matters
Radon levels genuinely vary by season and weather -- a real, physical fact reflected in why a continuous monitor's own accuracy claim is explicitly time-dependent rather than an instant flat number. A single short-term test tells you what your radon level was during one specific 48-hour period, not necessarily what it is year-round.
Neither approach is simply "better." A short-term test is the natural starting point if you've never tested before: it's inexpensive and gives you a first data point quickly. A continuous monitor is the natural next step if that first reading is elevated, borderline, or if you simply want ongoing visibility without repeat lab fees -- it trades a higher upfront cost for continuous, trend-level data instead of a single snapshot.
